.
On December 23, 1791, Empress Catherine of Russia
issued a decree restricting Jewish habitation to specific areas.
This decree applied to White Russia (Byelorussia), the
Ukraine and other areas taken in the partition. After the Third Partition, the decree was extended to include the newly
acquired territories along the Baltic Sea. Thus was born the
Pale of Settlement, the area where Jews were allowed to live;
an area that stretched from the Baltic to the Black Seas.
Of the areas then inhabited by Lithuanian Jewry, ethnic
Lithuania and Byelorussia became an integral part of Russia
and the southerm part, around Grodno and Suwalk, became
part of the Duchy of Warsaw (Poland). Although Lithuania
may have been divided, the Jewish Litvak community
remained integrated until World War I.
It has been estimated that, at the time of partition, 25 percent of all the Jews of easterm Europe were Litvak

Comparing Two Goldfoot Lines: Ian Goldfoot of South Africa and David and Nadene Goldfoot-American Siblings
Nadene Goldfoot
Ian's Y haplogroup has been tested at 67 alleles with Q-M378.
David's Y haplogroup has been Big Y tested with QBZ67. Previously it tested as Q-Y2200.
Genealogy shows that Ian, born November 4, 1934 in Kruderdorp, South Africa was the son of Solomon "Shlomo" Goldfoot b: August 1904 in Dublin, Ireland and Mary Alpert b: 1906 in Kilmarnark, Scotland. Avraham was the son of Yankel Goldfus b: 1768-1774 and Khana Unknown in Telsiai.
At one point, Nathan was also living in Dublin, Ireland and from the looks of the address, was next door or with his Goldfoot South African family recently from Telsiai, Lithuania family. Nathan had gone to England first, then went to Ireland. It was the path of many other Jewish Lithuanians.
David and Nadene are the children of Moses/Morris/Maurice Goldfoot b: 1908 of Portland, Oregon and Mildred Robinson born in 1934 and 1942. Maurice was the son of Nathan Abraham Goldfus/Goldfoot of Telsiai, Lithuania b:1881-1884. Nathan was the son of Movsha Goldfus b:1836 in Telsiai and Beila Unknown of Telsiai. Movsha was the son of Josel Goldfus b: 1798 and Rasha Unknown in Telsiai. Josel was the son of Yankel Goldfus b: 1768-1774 and Khana Unknown in Telsiai.
Josel and Movsha were brothers, sons of Yankel.
David took 5 generations to get to Yankel. (David, Maurice, Nathan, Movsha, Josel, Yankel.
Ian took 4 generations to get to Yankel. (Ian, Solomon, Hyman, Abraham, Yankel. )
Gene was also involved with the book: Bringing the Past to Life, Part II, Hirshhorn/Friedlander Families Revisited. From DeAar, South Africa. A Kahala link at: JewishGen. https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/de_aar/Bringing_Past.html. Yes, I have several Friedlanders matching my DNA as 4th cousins.
My genealogy work was checked by another distant cousin, Gene Lepere, author her autobiography, of NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN. Gene was the daughter of art collector, Joseph Hirshhorn, and worked as a marketing consultant. She lived in Los Angeles. So we're connected to her family. My brother and cousin Sandra match Donald, one of the male Hirshhorns. Gene led an amazing life. I used Jewishgen for much of my work.
The Shabbat Dinner Get-together: Ian drove down from Houston to Austin to meet us and that's a LONG distance. Texas is huge.

Early Wars Causing Lithuanian Jews to Flee to Ukraine
Nadene Goldfoot
In 1432 -1438 there was war in Lithuania. It was Lithuania and Poland against Russia.
From 1487-1494 a 2nd war was fought; the Lithuanian Muscovite War of Lithuania, the Golden Horde against Moscow.
From 1492-1537, the war raged on as the Muscovite-Lithuanian wars of Lithuania and Moscow. (1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue) and Jews had to leave Spain, start moving all over trying to find a home...
By 1495, Jews were living in Vilna, Grodno and Kovno totaling 10,000.
1508 was the Glinski Rebellion against Lithuania by Glinski supporters
1524 was the big Ottoman-Tartar invasion of Lithuania and Poland
1561to 1570 was the Northern 7 Years War of Lithuania/Poland against Sweden
They received a charter in 1529 guaranteeing freedom of movement and employment. Soon they were the leading workers in foreign trade and taxing and farming. However, from 1495-1502, the first 7 years of being in Lithuania, they were excluded FROM Lithuania. In 1566-1572, the Jewish badge was introduced for Jews to wear to distinguish themselves from citizens. Jews were disqualified in the court system for giving evidence.
1576 to 1582 was the Livonian War of everyone (Lithuania/Poland/Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Transylvania); being against Tsardom of Russia
1600-1629 was again the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Swedish War and 1605-1618 included war against Russia and 1606 -1608 the Zebrzydowski Rebellion of nobles against the king.
Organization took place. Jews were represented in the COUNCIL OF THE FOUR (then 5) LANDS, but that wasn't helping, so the Jews formed a separate COUNCIL OF LITHUANIA in 1623 when a separate tax-system was established.
Catherine II in the 1780'sBy 1762, Catherine II permitted all aliens to live in Russia, except Jews. Partitions of Poland, resulting from wars, took place in 1772, 1793, and 1795, when the large group of White Russian Jews, Ukraine, Lithuania and Courland became Russian subjects. For more than a century, they were all under the reactionary rule of the Czars.
Lithuania became part of Russia in 1795 which lasted until WWI of 1918. It had become a major part of the Jewish culture so was most important. It was the home of distinguished yeshivote (Jewish schools) and leading rabbis such as the Gaon of Vilna. It became the seat of MUSAR movement, and a center of Haskalah.
During World War I, 100,000 Jews were expelled or actually emigrated to the Russian interior, leaving their shtetles. In independent Lithuania, Jews received national autonomy from 1918- 1924. A Jewish National Council was established under a Ministry for Jewish Affairs. They had the right to levy taxation under government auspices.
Polish forces stops Austrian advance at Raszyn, only to retreat to the other side of the river soon afterwards.
The Austro-Polish War or Polish-Austrian War was a part of the War of the Fifth Coalition in 14 April 1809 (a coalition of the Austrian Empire and the United Kingdom against Napoleon's French Empire and Bavaria). It ended October 14, 1809. It lasted 6 months.
Gaon of Vilna, Rabbi Eleazar
Vilna, the largest city as well as capital, was lost to Poland in 1919, the result of WWI. This weakened the Jews of Vilna. After 1924, autonomy was restricted solely to religious matters, while the economic position of the Jews deteriorated in the oncoming years.
No Jews survived the expulsion of Jews of 1290 when Jews were also expulsed from England. A few former Marranos settled in Dublin after 1660 and more arrived as military purveyors after the 1689 revolution. Original Jews were displaced by Ashkenazim, but by 18th century, population declined and by 1816 there were only 3 Jewish families in Dublin and a few in other Irish towns. They were joined by others in 1822 and the population was 400 by 1880. Emigration from Eastern Europe took place at the end of the 19th century and many went to Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Belfast. the chief rabbinate was founded in 1918 being Yitzhak Halevi Herzog with the Jewish population in 1990 at 1,600, mainly in Dublin,
Many Jews of Lithuania moved on to Dublin, Ireland and from there, to South Africa which Jews started settling in the early 19th century. Capetown had a synagogue by 1841. The settlers were traders and peddlers who traveled among the Boer farmers. Later they went to the towns. Gold was discovered there in the end of the 19th century, which eastern European Jews which drew many. Johannesburg became the main Jewish settlement, and they enjoyed the political equality in Cape Colony and Natal, but obtained it in the Transvaal only after the 2nd Boer War. Immigration to South Africa was popular following WWI and came mostly from Lithuania.
I know that Simon Goldfoot moved from Lithuania to South Africa in the 20's. His son, Stanley Goldfoot b: May 2, 1914, was born there in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa. Immediately after graduation high school, he made Aliyah to Palestine, and he lived in Jerusalem, becoming the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group which the British called the Stern Gang.
Polish–Lithuanian Conflict) was an undeclared war between newly independent Lithuania and Poland following World War I, which happened mainly, but not only, in the Vilnius and Suwałki regions. The war is viewed differently by the respective sides. According to Lithuanian historians, it was part of the Lithuanian Wars of Independence and lasted from May 1919 to 29 November 1920. Polish historians deem the Polish–Lithuanian war as occurring only in September–October 1920. Since the spring of 1920, the conflict became part of the wider Polish–Soviet War and was largely shaped by its progress. It was subject to international mediation at the Conference of Ambassadors and the League of Nations.
Though most emigration from Lithuania went to Israel, it is now going to other English-speaking countries. The rabbis of the principal congregations in Johannesburg (Jewish population was 63,620. Cape Town of which Cape Peninsula had 28,000. Chief rabbis and 65 synagogues are affiliated to the Orthodox Federation of Synagogues. A Reform Movement started in 1933 and has 14 affiliated congregations. Also, there are 69 nursery schools, 10 primary schools and 8 high schools. They have an extensive Jewish press and a lot of cultural activities. By 1990 there were 120,000 Jews living in South Africa.
In 1923, there were 300 Jewish elementary schools, the majority teaching in Hebrew, a minority in Yiddish (Hebrew-German Combo).
Jews of Central Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries immigrated to Ukraine and from Poland in the 16th to 17th centuries. Severe massacres happened during the Chmielnicki and the Haidamak uprising in the 17th to 18th centuries.
The Frankist and Hasidic movements originated in the 18th century in Ukraine which was also associated with the early Zionism in the 19th-20th centuries. Jews of Galicia and White Russia had emigrated there.
The Soviet Government promoted Jewish settlement in the Ukraine in the 1920's, however. They used the funds of the American Joint Distribution Committee in the regions of Kalinindorf, Zlatopol, and Stalindorf. By 1930 there were 90,000 Jewish agriculturists there. In January 1918 , a regime of national autonomy was estalished in the Ukraine. Jewish economy and culture suffered under Soviet rule. About half of Soviet Russia's 3 million Jews lived there before WWII. Under Nazi rule, the Jewish people who had not fled to Russia were wiped out by the Germans and Ukrainians from 1941 to 1942. The Jewish population was officially put at 777,126 in 1970 and at 484,129 in 1989.
There were restrictions on them imposed during the 1930's limited the influx (when Germany and Nazism were affecting all countries towards Jews), although many German Jews were able to settle in South Africa. After 1939, however, Jewish immigration was small to nothing. It has increased again in the late 1980's. .jpg%20invasion%20of%20Poland.jpg)
In 1939 when Germany marched into Poland, starting WWII, the Jewish population numbered about 175,000. About 25,000 were deported by the Russians from Lithuania and Latvia in July 1940. The remaining Jews were massacred by the Germans and Lithuanians by 1943. 24,000 Jews were living there in 1959, but by 1989 about half of these had left for Israel, leaving 12,312. Today of 2023 there are 52,300. I presume most have made aliyah to Israel.
Ukraine was the center of anti-Semitism. It was the scene of pogroms in 1905 and 1918 to 1920. Fiddler on the Roof was situated in Ukraine. As the play begins, Tevye, a Jewish milkman, tells of the customs in the little Russian town of Anatevka. It is 1905, and life here is as precarious as a fiddler on the roof, yet, through their traditions, the villagers endure. Anatevka (Ukrainian: Анатевка) is a Ukrainian refugee village that provides food, housing, education, and medical support for refugees resulting from the 2014 Russian invasion and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The village was established in 2015 and currently houses hundreds of families.
The Soviet Government promoted Jewish settlement in the Ukraine in the 1920's, however. Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy (also transliterated as Zelensky or Zelenskiy; born 25 January 1978) is a Ukrainian politician and former comedian and actor who is the sixth and current president of Ukraine since 2019.

The Cunundrum of Our Goldfoot Line: DNA Between QBZ67 and Q-M378--3rd Cousins
Nadene Goldfoot
Dad, known in South Portland boxing circles as Billy Meshke, AKA Morris Goldfoot, son of Nathan Abraham Goldfoot, below: Nathan Abraham Goldfus b: 1871-d: 1912My brother was tested with the Big Y haplogroup test offered by Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and it is QBZ67. Earlier before the Big Y test, David was listed as a Q-M242, and Q-Y2200 I have traced the Goldfoot line through David to our father, Moshe Goldfoot/Morris Goldfoot/Maurice Goldfoot to our grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfoot/Goldfus (Nathan "Nokhim Avram"Abraham" Goldfus Goldfoot) to Telsiai, Lithuania who had immigrated to England, then Dublin, Ireland where he lived with other Goldfoots. He even married briefly and then somehow got to Council, Idaho and married our grandmother (Bubbie) Zlata Jermulowski/sky. We knew our grandfather only as Nathan Goldfoot. I was not aware of any middle name until I did genealogy searches, or where he was born. Census only said "Russia."
One thing I can be sure is that the whole line of Goldfus that I found were from Telsiai going back to about 1730, and that there were many on our tree.
The problem is that I do not have paper evidence as to Nathan's parents. I chose Movsha ben Josel (John) Goldfus born 1836 in Telsiai, Lithuania from others because of the first name which was probably Moshe as my father's was on his birth certificate. Otherwise, I might not have realized that his name of Morris was the chosen anglicized form for Moshe (Moses). The Jewish custom was to name after the deceased. Movsha of Telsiai (Telz) was a distiller. (a person or company that manufactures liquor."barrels that the master distiller deems to be of superior quality").
Ian was in track and field at the university in Austin, Texas. He was a fast runner. Nov 4, 1934-Feb 9, 2022.Then I was found by Ian Goldfoot who had moved to the States from South Africa. We talked and realized at once that we were of the same Goldfoot line. Ian tested his haplogroup DNA and was an Q-M378, a little different from my brother's Q-M242.
The direct lines of both Nathan Abraham Goldfoot, my grandfather, and Ian Goldfoot and to his half-sister, Denise, my contemporary-born in 1934, and my 3rd cousin, is as follows:
Me: Nadene Goldfoot b: 1934 Portland, OR; f: Moshe,Maurice Goldfoot b: 1908 Portland; to Nathan Abraham Goldfus b: 1871 Telsiai, Lithuania to Movsha Goldfus b: 1836, to Iosel Josel Symka ben Yankel Goldfus b: 1798, to Iankel Yankel ben Abram Goldfus b: 1768-1774
Ian: Ian Goldfoot b: 1934 Krugerdorp, South Africa, f: Solomon Shlomo Solly Goldfoot b: 1904, Dublin, Ireland; Hyman Haim Goldfus Goldfoot b: 1867 Telsiai, to Avraham Haim Goldfus b: 1825 Telsiai, to Iankel Yankel ben Abram Goldfus b: 1768-1774
Therefore, as far as I can tell, Ian and my connection goes back to 1768 in Telsiai,Lithuania to Iankel or Yankel ben Abram Goldfus and his wife, Khana. Ian is 3rd cousin to my brother and myself and to my contemporary 1st cousins from my father's family.
1. IANKEL YANKEL BEN ABRAM6 GOLDFUS (ABRAM5, IONES JONAH4, UNKNOWN DNA MATCHING3, JACOB2, SALTMAN1 KALONYMUS, DARSHAN, JAFFE) was born Bet. 1768 - 1774 in Telsai, Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania, and died December 06, 1860 in Telsliai, Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania. He married (2) KHANA UNKNOWN Abt. 1800. She was born Abt. 1778 in Telsiai, Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania.
Notes for IANKEL YANKEL BEN ABRAM GOLDFUS:
3/9/08 I found a Rachel Clare Goldfoot b: 4 Feb 1906 and died Oct 1986 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire at age 80. She may have been a widow of a Goldfoot, I don't know.
I found and met Stanley Goldfoot in Jerusalem. He is my 3rd cousin. Stanley was a contemporary of my mother. Stanley was born in 1914 in South Africa. His father was Simon Goldfoot b: 1874 in Telsiai, Lithuania, and grandfather was SOLOMON-Shlomo Zalman Goldfus/ Goldfoot b: 1848-1849. then his father was Avrohom Abraham Haim Goldfus b: 1825 in Telsiai, making Stanley and Ian related through Abraham Haim Goldfus as 2nd cousins.
Stanley and Helen, his 2nd wife, living at Dor v'Dor Street in Jerusalem. (Stanley-May 2, 1914-Nov 24, 2006)Stanley was the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group, called the Stern Gang by the British who were holding the 30 year mandate of Palestine. He had immigrated to Palestine at age 18 right out of high school in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa. Meeting him in Jerusalem at the King David Hotel was a thrill ! We met several times after that at his home.
3/11/08 Oral history from Stanley Goldfoot and Denise's father, Solomon Goldfoot, was that they were descendants of Vilna Gaon, who was Elijah Ben Solomon Zalman. 1720-1797. Talmudist.
About the Vilna Gaon, very famous Rabbi: leaves about 20,000 descendants as of 1975 starting from the birth year of 1750 starting with the children of thee Vilna Gaon of 8 children. p. 8.He was born in Lithuania and was early famed for his scholarship. From 1740-1745 he traveled among the Jewish
communities of Poland and Germany, settling in Vilna where he taught and later
founded his own academy. He lived in
seclusion and refused rabbinic office.
He was called a saint and a scholar.
He led the opposition to the Hasidim in Lithuania, ordering their
excommunication and the destruction of their literature. His obdurate attitude checked the spread of
Hasidism in Lithuania. When he was about
60, he set out unaccompanied for Palestine but returned before reading it. His reputation lies primarily in the field of
halakhah. He sought to establish
critical texts of the authoritative rabbinic writings, resorting also to
emendations. He avoided pilpul and based
his views and rulings upon the plain meaning of the text. He regarded highly the early kabbalistic works,
and was extremely critical of philosophy.
He was interested in secular studies insofar as they threw light on the
Torah, but he opposed the Haskalah. His
works include commentaries on the Bible, annotations on the Talmud, Midrash,
and Zohar, works on mathematics, the geography of Palestine, Hebrew grammar,
etc. He exercised a vast influence on
his own and succeeding generations, the Mitnaggedim regarding him as their
spiritual leader.
from Geni: Dear Ezra,
Looking at your tree it appears that someone has given your patriline the identification of: Haplogroup Q-M242 / Q-Y2754 Y-DNA (in the about section of your father's profile and in the pedigree up to Moshe (Movsha) Magid). Do you know how this Q-M242 identification came to be associated to your pedigree? ( b: 1791 in Vilnius, Lithuania).
From the GENI tree it appears that Moshe Magid is the patriline great grand nephew of HaGRA. If all of this is correct and verifiable then it seems that indeed HaGRA is a Q-M242. Can you please cite the Maciamo Hay paper?
If this above holds true than you yourself may be a patriline relation of HaGRA. Have you done your yDNA testing?
Cordially and Appreciatively,
Adam (when researching about Vilna Gaon)
4/1/15 and 6/17/15, Yankel died at age 92 from old age, on Lithuania death list of LitvakSIG. On Tevet 5. also from Jewishgen through Dennis Khan.
Q-M242 is believed to have arisen around the Altai Mountains area (or South Central Siberia), approximately 17,000 to 31,700 years ago. However, the matter remains unclear due to limited sample sizes and changing definitions of Haplogroup Q: early definitions used a combination of the SNPs M242, P36.2, and MEH2 as defining mutations.

To find the connection of a 3rd cousin is quite a feat. However, we Jews make up only 0.02% of the world population, and of the Jewish haplogroups, Qs make up probably about 5% or less of this group as well. We're a rare group ! May we continue somehow! We're going to depend on those who did not change their names and are still Goldfus. It takes a male to keep the surname going.
From What Haplogroup WE Be? from another of my blogs:
Q1b1: 5% of Ashkenazi Jewish men are found to be Q1b, of which is my father’s haplogroup (Q1b1a or Q-L245) and the latest is called Q-Y2200, updated to Q-BZ67. Q originated in Central Asia 15,000 to 20,000 years ago and the men migrated through northern Eurasia into the Americas. Q3 became Native Americans coming from a mutation that happened 8,000 to 12,000 years ago. Q1b’s are from the Altai Mountains in Mongolia, Siberia and parts of Turkey. Khazaria may be the home of Q1b’s, and therefore these men could be part of the Ashina Royal Dynasty. Their common ancestor was a man 1,000 years ago. New Q SNP test results in: Q-L245 is Ashkenazi, Q-Y2780=ca 1400 CE; Q-&Ip1071=ca 700 CE, Q-&Ip1010-11 YP1008=800 CE, Q-&P1009=1400 CE ; ?????
4/21/10: P.S.Now we're not positive if Q1b comes from Khazaria though if I had to bet I'd bet that it is. It hasn't been accepted by the main body of scientists who decide such things. To me it's the most logical place, but we have no actual proof. We need more, perhaps several bodies with teeth that could be tested for the Ydna from Khazaria. Most likely the population of Khazaria was made up of a mixture of people from various haplogroups, but it's the Royal family that we're hoping to turn out to be Q1b's as the Royal family converted to Judaism but did not force their people to convert.Researcher: Prof. Alfred Krupa: " As for my Ashina of Khazaria certification, it has been issued by the largest genetic company IGENEA of Zurich, after agreement from the worlds largest genetic company FTDNA of Houston. Bennett Greenspann has been advised about all elements of formal papers and my own research, and approved such conclusion".
Update: 5/10/2012 Q1b1 is losing out in being considered as coming from the Royal family of Khazaria. DNA expert Rebekah Canada reports that they're thinking maybe G types and R1a1a types more likely candidates.
Double Update: 5/10/2012 from Rebekah Canada:
Updated on SNPs 5/26/16 to Q-BZ67.
Is Q-L245 found in modern Arab populations? Yes
